Canadian stress pioneer Dr. Hans Selye’s favorite definition of stress was; “that which accelerates the rate of aging through the wear and tear of daily living.”

Every time stress is experienced or perceived, whether physical (pain), psychological (anger) or biological (illness), the stress reaction is basically the same. A series of chemical and electrical changes are triggered by a tiny area in the base of the brain called the hypothalamus. These changes stimulate the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline that temporarily suppress the body’s immune system and also impedes several autonomic functions that impact body temperature, heart rate, water balance, breathing, cognitive processing, digestion, sexual appetite, blood flow and blood pressure.

During these physical changes, a great strain is placed on the body that, over time can wear the body down and ultimately wear the body out. Prolonged periods of stress that keep the body inefficiently functioning, increase wear and tear on the body and impair the immune system significantly.

Daily exposure to stress, whether through worry, frustration or a physically demanding  situation, has a cumulative effect that habituates people to extremely unhealthy amounts of adrenaline , noradrenalin and cortisol.  Constant exposure to high doses of stress hormones places a huge burden on the  body which, over a long period of time begins to “wear out” faster, effectively aging the body prematurely.

In contrast, effectively directing stress energy actually slows the rate of aging whilst increasing vitality.
